Dear Mr. Roach,
I am writing to tell you about my experience with Daize Goodwin
at the “Surf with Daize” surf camp in Kitty Hawk,
NC. My eleven year old daughter, Gabrielle, attended the camp
August 14-17, 2007. I was fortunate to attend every day and
was able to closely observe Daize and the camper girls.
From the very first day, Daize presented herself as a positive
and confident young woman, greeting the parents and girls with
an infectious smile and warm handshake. She immediately made
the girls feel at ease by sitting with them on the sand in a
circle, sharing her beach towel and even her sunscreen, and asked
them to share something about themselves. Later, Daize and the
girls wrote their personal goals in the sand.
Each day Daize taught the girls a life lesson in addition to
instructing them on the basics of surfing. It was this sharing
and dialogue that struck me more so than the excellent surfing
instruction the girls received. Some of these lessons included
friendship, family, community and charity. For example, during
the week Daize had the girls comb the beach for trash, and make
cards for children in a local hospital. The activities and lessons
Daize planned made the girls have a more positive attitude, bond
quickly as a group, and encourage each other while riding the
waves. Daize has a gift for making these life lessons seem fun
and desirable as she herself displays a genuine giving spirit.
Daize is definitely a positive female role model, often a rarity
in this day and age. This was evident in her demeanor, language,
and instruction. She made the girls each feel special by her
individual attention, nick names, praise and high “fives.” The
week ended with an awards ceremony attended by the parents where
all the girls received a different award depending on their skill
or attribute.
I would not hesitate to recommend Daize as a surf camp instructor.
She possesses a natural love of surfing and willingness to share
this passion with a new generation of young girls. Thank you
for sharing Daize with us on the Outer Banks!
Sincerely,
